In the last few decades, excellence has become a core value for many churches. This has a lot to do with the emphasis that the church growth movement of the 1980’s and 90’s placed on carrying out ministry with as much skill as any CEO structuring and leading a company to success.
This emphasis on doing things well has its pro’s and con’s. On the one hand, a commitment to excellence can motivate us to give our best effort to carrying out the assignments God has given us, and that’s a good thing.
On the other hand, excellence can become an idol that prevents us from moving forward because of a fear of not being able to do something perfectly.
