How to Receive God’s Outpouring

by

From the Series: Overflow

God’s original design for mankind, and his original intent is to bless you (obviously, there are a lot of opinions about what that blessing looks like, but God’s blessing is a biblical concept).

God’s original plan was to bless the people he created for his own purpose and pleasure.

The Bible started with the blessing of Eden before the curse of sin came.

But the curse of sin DID come. And mankind forfeited God’s perfect blessing and could do nothing on his own to secure it again.

But guess what…

God’s redemptive plan is STILL to bless you.

Paul, quoting David, said,

Romans 4:7-8 AMP

Blessed and happy and favored are those whose lawless acts have been forgiven, and whose sins have been covered up and completely buried. Blessed and happy and favored is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account nor charge against him.

The fullness of his grace, of his Spirit, of his power, of his peace, his joy, his favor, his divine guidance, his smile, his affection, is made freely available.

God is pouring it out today upon his people!

Acts 2:17-18 NIV

In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

The “last days,” Peter said, were starting on that day – on the Day of Pentecost. And the last days are today and every day until Jesus returns.

In other words, God’s outpouring is for YOU for NOW.

So, how do you get God’s outpouring? How do you receive his blessing?

ONE thing to KNOW…

God’s favor is offered freely, in Christ, to anyone who will receive it by faith.

It has been purchased by the death, by the blood, of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 1:3 NRSV

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.

But… in spite of the fact that God’s favor and blessing are secured for us in Christ and freely offered by grace through faith, the experience and the enjoyment of his full favor and blessing are reserved for those who will do the work of taking full possession of all that has been purchased for us.

Just as the Israelites were given the Promised Land by God’s grace but still had to secure it by their persistent, faithful work, so we secure the blessing God freely gives by our persistent and obedient faith.

SEVEN things to DO…

1. Pray for God’s outpouring.

You don’t have, because you don’t ask. (See James 4:2)

2. Work for God’s outpouring.

Work out your salvation (not FOR it). (See Philippians 2:12)

3. Fight for God’s outpouring.

You’re in a war whether you asked to be in a war or not (and isn’t that always the nature of war?). So put on your armor (see Ephesians 6:10-18) and fight the good fight.

4. Hurt for God’s outpouring.

“Never trust a leader without a limp” – Mark Batterson

You will be hurt in your attempt to secure the blessings God wants for you. (See Galatians 6:17)

Legend has it that when King Arthur would send the Knights of the Round Table out to battle, if they returned and upon inspection had no wounds, they’d be sent back out with the charge, “Go get your scars!”

5. Live for God’s outpouring.

By “live for” I mean, make God’s outpouring the most important thing about your life – your ultimate motivation, the thing for which you breathe!

6. Die for God’s outpouring.

Do I mean “die” literally? Maybe. Probably not in America, but in some places, yes. And even if you’re never called upon to die as a martyr, you still have the privilege of dying daily. (See 1 Corinthians 15:31)

7. Praise God for his outpouring, even in advance!

This means believing that, even when you don’t see it, feel it, touch it, or taste it yet, you KNOW God will be faithful, so you praise him for it in advance!

As I said at the beginning, BLESSED are those whose sins are forgiven. If you’re carrying your sin and need forgiveness and all the blessing that God offers after, receive Jesus Christ into your life by faith today.
