Possible Preaching Angle

The God who sees does not lose track of the discarded.

Genesis 21 tells the painful story of Hagar and Ishmael being pushed out of Abraham’s household and left in the wilderness. The text does not soften the cruelty of the moment. A vulnerable mother and child are sent away by people with power, resources, and a story that seems to have no room left for them.

But God hears the cry of the child, speaks to Hagar in the wilderness, and opens her eyes to a well. The sermon can hold this tension honestly: people may be written out of someone else’s story, but they are not erased from God’s sight.

Preaching Move

Move listeners from the fear of being unseen, discarded, or forgotten toward the hope that God hears cries from the wilderness and opens wells where death seemed certain.

Community Bridge

This angle can speak to anyone who has been cast aside by a family, institution, church, or community. It also asks the church to pay attention to the people powerful households and systems have pushed into the wilderness.
