Possible Preaching Angle

The God of Genesis 1 does not wait for the chaos to resolve itself. God meets the formless deep and begins naming, separating, ordering, and blessing.

The text shows God working with what is formless and chaotic and steadily bringing order, light, and blessing out of it. Most people in the pews are dealing with their own version of formless chaos: a strained marriage, a job in transition, a community fractured by conflict. They often assume God only shows up once things are sorted out.

A sermon here can make the opposite case: that the God of Genesis 1 specifically meets people in the chaos and starts naming, separating, and blessing piece by piece. The practical bridge is helping listeners identify one corner of their life or community that still feels “without form and void,” and inviting them to ask what the next small act of ordering or blessing might look like this week.

Preaching Move

Move listeners from the pressure to have everything resolved before God can work toward the hope that God’s creative presence begins precisely in places that feel unfinished, disordered, or unlivable.

Community Bridge

This angle can move beyond private spirituality by naming the communal chaos people are carrying: neighborhood conflict, public distrust, racial division, economic anxiety, or congregational fatigue. The invitation is not to fix everything at once, but to join God’s first small acts of naming, separating, blessing, and making room for life.
